Charly Blacks Gyal you a Party animal Certified Diamond
The Deejay got the surprise of his life last weekend when he learned his hit song ‘Gyal You A Party Animal’ had achieved diamond certification in Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Belize, and Guatemala.
According to his representatives at Universal Records, no other dancehall artiste has ever achieved this standard in that region. The diamond certification in Latin America equates to a record that has sold in excess of 600,000 units.
“I was onstage performing in the town of Nicoya when he got the news.” “While I was doing my last song, after I got my first forward, they stopped the music,” he said.
Blacks explained he was asking them to replay the rhythm when he saw the Universal rep come on stage, saying he has something for me.
“He then started to speak in Spanish and a translator explained what it was. It was the fact that Gyal You A Party Animal went Diamond.”
It was to be an emotional moment for the Trelawny-born entertainer.
“Actually bus’ a small cry on stage Saturday night,” he confessed. “Man dem waa me drop down pan stage.”
It took him a while before he regained composure. “I was off key for the first four bars. I couldn’t say ‘It’s Charly again’. Had to make that part pass, fumbled, and then got myself together and tried to finish the performance,” he said.
“When I went back stage I had to bad dem up. Tell dem say how dem know say me no have weak heart and dem ting deh,” he said.
Blacks revealed that at that special moment, he thought about his late Aunt Gloria, who died about three years ago.
“She was like a mother and father to me and her favorite song from me was Too Blessed to be Stressed. So I actually cried, I wished she was there. It was very emotional for me.”
Gyal You A Party Animal, produced by Kurt Riley, was released in July 2014. The video was shot the following month and released in early 2015. Since then, it has had more than 78 million views on YouTube.
He credits the success of the video plus a lot of promotional work in Latin America for the song’s success.
During his visits to perform in Colombia, he said he would spend an extra few days doing promotions and giving away CDs.
